THE IRONY IN OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM DUE TO COVID- 19.

9 days to the end of the lockdown. What’s next for our education system? Will the Ugandan education system catch up anytime soon?P.7 results recently came out and the funny thing is that these vacists have to look for new schools. They are to become the next senior ones.It is ironic because the former senior ones have not yet been promoted. The current form fives and the current form threes are still in the pre-candidate classes. Hence the country does not have candidates as yet.

Nurseries and kindergartens have literally never opened since the first lockdown. Apart from some few parents who have put in an effort to help their children. I bet most of these toddlers have not been able to get the basic skills a child is supposed to get in nursery. I pity primary one teachers who may have to do the job of nursery teachers.

Universities are still struggling too. I guess some parents do not even know the classes of their children anymore. Recently my father asked me if I was in the second semester of year 2. He was surprised to hear that we are still in semester 1.Following the normal schedule without covid ,I would be going to year 3 in August but here I am waiting to continue with semester 1 of year 2.

The majority are the less privileged but the more privileged are evenly scattered to confuse the numbers. The lucky few who are able to afford international schools have managed to cope with online studies and exams and have continued with the Cambridge education system. Some schools have put in an initiative to teach students online but the irony is they will have to wait for the government to know when their students or pupils will sit final exams. It is even worse for those who can’t afford quality education because they have to dance to the tune of covid -19 waves that are up and down or even the government that is trying to protect them.

Has the Ugandan government put in any effort to vaccinate the citizens of Uganda? Well…… NO. While other countries maximized the chance to vaccinate their citizens and things are going back to normal, we have been sitted at home counting down the 42 days. Uganda is just waiting for the President’s speech. Will the government ease the lockdown or extend the lockdown days? I guess all those who have studied in the COVID era will have their own story to tell.

My major worry is about how the whole situation is being handled and its future effects. Will the Ugandan education system ever catch up? The time for terms or semesters is not the same anymore. Teachers and lecturers teach as if there are on a marathon since there is a lot to cover in a short time. Some teachers/lecturers even choose what topics to teach and which ones to leave out. Learners are stressed since they have to grasp a lot in a short time.

I guess there is a lot of drama in our education system currently which is an issue that needs to be addressed. The gap needs to be covered. Otherwise in the future we are going to have half-baked graduates who are going to qualify for jobs which will greatly affect the quality of services that our people will receive.

WHAT IS YOUR SAY ABOUT THE CURRENT SITUATION OF THE EDUCATION SECTOR IN THE COUNTRY?

DO YOU THINK THERE IS A WAY OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM CAN CATCH UP?
